Reformer Pilates

Classical foundations. Contemporary movement.

At Esteem, our Reformer Pilates classes draw from both classical and contemporary Pilates.

Classical Pilates is grounded in Contrology - the original method developed by Joseph Pilates - with an emphasis on control, precision, concentration, breath and coordinated movement. The Reformer forms part of the broader apparatus system developed to use spring resistance and a moving carriage to both challenge and support movement.

Contemporary Pilates builds upon those foundations while allowing the method to evolve alongside modern movement principles, exercise science and a greater understanding of different bodies and individual needs.

We deliberately work with both.

Our class structure allows us to retain the control, concentration and movement principles at the heart of Pilates while incorporating a broader range of strength and dynamic movement. Depending on the purpose of the class, programming may include traditional Reformer repertoire alongside contemporary exercises, dynamic sequences and additional resistance such as hand weights.

This gives our instructors the scope to plan a complete movement experience with consideration given to strength, mobility, control, sequencing, transitions, progression and appropriate modification.

Our Signature beginner to all levels

Our signature Reformer class is designed to accommodate a range of movement and Reformer experience. Newer members can learn the equipment, movement foundations, control and technique, while more experienced members can be appropriately progressed or challenged by the instructor. It is Beginner to All Levels, rather than simply a beginner class.

Intermediate to advanced

For members with established Reformer experience who are ready to explore greater movement complexity, coordination, stability, strength and control. Classes may incorporate more challenging variations, transitions, balance requirements and movement sequences. Prior Reformer experience is required.
